Day 4 Lahinch to Galway (60 miles, 848m)

60 mile day along beautiful coastal roads. Also a day of glorious sun and dry weather taking in the Cliffs of Moher and on through the "The Burren”, a surreal landscape of Karster limestone.

That night we'd stayed at a real favourite B&B, Craiglea Lodge. Lovely owners, lots of joshing (when asked what to do with some used tea mugs I was instructed to wash them up. Much to the owner's embarrassment, I proceeded to do so).
Sophie managed to get away for 4 days with her Dad, but back to lectures tomorrow
Although a magnet for tourists and coaches, the Cliffs of Moher were dramatic and well worth a detour.

Thistles were common.
Would have been lovely to explore the cliffs over half a day...

...but had to get back to the bike.
Fab lichen!
Stunning views on both sides of the headland.
Anyone know the name of this yellow daisy-like flower?

Quick pose before descending from the O'Brien's tower at the Cliffs of Moher.

A somewhat grumpy attendant stopped us from taking our bikes with us up the steps (we were concerned about leaving them at the bottom).
Wonderful skies

We then wended our way inland.

Lots of castles along the way. This one in tact, but many ruined, some just a single facade reminiscent of Ozymandias

'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'

Any botanists out there? Is this Toadflax?
Any more suggestions?

Strange riven plates of limestone dropping down to the ocean...

...creating textured surfaces frequented by sheep, cattle and tourists.
Interesting how these boulders made it there

Fast road, frequented by cyclists, cars and coaches.
Stupendous views for miles and miles

Stone everywhere.
Eventually, we turned inland...
...bidding farewell to the ocean road.

And on to Hazel Mountain!!

Thank you Janet who spotted this sign along the way!
